About Me

Josef Kandoll W

Getting his first story published at six-years old convinced young Josef Kandoll W of his destiny. By age 12, he was taking photographs with a box camera. Armed with pen and camera, the world became smaller as he backpacked, biked, hitchhiked, boated and trained around five continents over the years. The nineties brought him to Puerto Vallarta, Mexico, where he resides today. Fully bilingual in Spanish and English, he travels around the country, reporting on culture and the arts, events and travel related items. His major interest,
(mis-)communication, leads him into his present novel, still under construction.

Most of his digital photography is accomplished with a Canon EOS 5D as well as a Konica Minolta Maxxum 7D. Media include slides, black-and-white and color in normal and high resolution digital images. Articles and images have been published in Beach Magazine, TravelAge West, Bay Vallarta, Vallarta Lifestyles, Homes & Living, Concierge, Costa Vallarta and People magazine.

Specializing in interviews and profiles, travel articles, cultural events and arts coverage, the focus is on the human element. Kandoll writes primarily in English but functionally well in Spanish, editing his own work prior to submission. With over eleven years in Puerto Vallarta, his good working relations with other local journalists, university administrators, restaurateurs and various levels of society gives him access where others can’t find the doorway.

He belongs to Travel Writers, Media Kitty, MATT and Cameralternativa and was a member of the esteemed New York Camera Club while living in that great city. Education, other than through innumerable mentors and maestros from various backgrounds, was through Minneapolis College of Arts and Design and the University of Minnesota. In addition, he belonged to several writers’ groups, such as the Loft in Minneapolis and the Puerto Vallarta Writers’ Group.

Born in the United States, Josef Kandoll W experienced early life as an immigrant of Finnish descent, stimulating an interest in intercultural communications that continues to be his fascination today. It has led him to travels around the world, and, while settled in Mexico, will keep him traveling for a very long time. At the focus of interest are people, courageous in the face of adversity, creating a better life for themselves and others.
